REST DAY

Nutrition tip of the week:

CREATE A NEW FOOD CULTURE. Even if you've never heard the saying, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do," you might be living it. The culture in which we find ourselves can strongly influence how we eat. When we're served big meals on big plates, we have a tendency to eat most of the food - whether we're hungry or not. You might have noticed that you naturally gain or lose weight at different duty stations.

Brian Wansink, a researcher at Cornell University, has been studying the environmental factors that influence our food choices for years. His research has shown that our eyes can deceive us into eating way more than we actually need to function optimally, and he's come up with many solutions to create a new food culture. Here are 3. For more, do a search for "Brian Wansink" on the internet.

1) Eat off smaller plates and drink out of tall, thin glasses.
2) Keep healthy food visible and store mega-sized bags of chips out of sight. There is tons of research showing that "out of sight, out of mind & mouth" applies to food choices.
3) Turn off the TV when you eat. Your brain is directly linked to your stomach; they communicate with each other when you eat to let you know when you've had enough. If your brain isn't noting sensory input from your environment that you're eating (smelling the food, looking at it, actually tasting it) because it's busy watching The Office, the signals that you're full don't get sent.
