VITAMIN D: What, Why & How
WHAT?
A vitamin & hormone available in sunlight & food that affects every aspect of human functioning.
WHY?
Muscle strength & health (athletic performance), blood sugar (your body's fuel tank), blood lipid (fat) levels, bone strength & health.
HOW?
1) Get Your Levels Tested: Ask for a 25(OH)D test (25-hydroxyvitamin D test) at your doctor's office. According to this site, a normal range is 30.0 to 74.0 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003569.htm
2) Soak it Up: Direct sunlight exposure for 15 - 20 minutes without sunscreen on face & arms, 3 times per week should suffice. Note: People with darker skin may not soak up as much Vitamin D because of the melanin content (pigment) of their skin.
3) Eat it Up: Find it in wild-caught salmon, tuna, sardines, milk & eggs.
